Martin Reilly MRICS

40 years of experience in the construction industry at all levels and disciplines

1980s

Martin joined Taylor Woodrow Construction in 1981 as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor on a day release course which ultimately led to full RICS Membership by November 1990. As a trainee he worked in the public defence sector on RAF High Wycombe, which was a new build underground operation centre at Naphill. He then moved into private sector work as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor on a new shopping centre at Surrey Quays, Rotherhithe, London.

1990s

He was promoted in 1991 to Senior Quantity Surveyor, working on an office block at 1 Whittington Avenue, London, EC1, and then onto the new Croydon Library in 1994. In this instance he not only led all of the commercial activities, but also acted as project lead for substantial parts of the project.

A move to Fairclough / Amec in 1997 led to bidding and subsequent delivery of three blocks of luxury residential apartments - Wrights Lane (now known as Sovereign, Consort and Regent Court).

In 1999 Martin moved to James Longley & Co Ltd as Managing Quantity Surveyor for the London Region, being responsible for a portfolio of some £50m including Hendon Real Tennis Club, Ocean Music in Hackney, student residences at Imperial College, Jas bonded warehouse at Stanwell and several legacy projects.

2000s

Kier Group took over James Longley & Co Ltd in July 2000 and appointed Martin to be the Commercial Manager for the new Kier Longley business based in Crawley. The Crawley office was responsible for all projects in Sussex and Surrey. Martin was to be responsible for all bid submissions and commercial delivery of projects. Developing the bid process to become both robust and attractive, Martin worked closely with the Operations Director in growing the business from £12m in its first year of trading to £50m in 2013.

2010s

In 2013 Martin was promoted to Operations Director at the Kier office in Maple Cross, taking on an office with many challenges and trebling turnover to £90m within four years. This came with a healthy margin, excellent Health & Safety record, high levels of staff engagement, outstanding customer satisfaction and a strong pipeline of future work.  The office covered the west London boroughs and the Thames Valley. Projects ranged from commercial office refurbishments, new and refurbished schools, new and refurbished hospitals and health care facilities, public building improvements, leisure centres and retail units with values ranging from £500k to £65m.

The Maple Cross Operations Director role was responsible for everything from business development, work winning, establishment of robust delivery teams, governance of projects, supply chain engagement, client liaison, driving SHE excellence, attracting, developing and retaining quality staff as well as the usual functions of a Board Director.

During the period 2015 – 2017 Martin covered the role of SHE Director for the £280m turnover Kier Construction Southern, a business of which the Maple Cross office formed a part, as well as his duties as Operations Director for the Maple Cross business.
